Letter from our Principal......

Jaguar Parents/Guardians:

As we enter into the second week of the year and the dreaded "homework" word is being bantered about... I wanted to send a message home regarding School Loop, our online grading/communication system.  For our veteran parents this will be review, but for our new parents... this may be helpful information.

Depending on your perspective and how you use it... School Loop (SL) is a valuable resource, but potentially a curse.  Literally... 24/7, SL allows parents to check grades anytime. This is not good for the mental health of any middle school student, let alone their parents!  While communication is always a good thing, there is such a thing as too much or too often.  Since our overall quest as parents is to get students to be responsible for their own lives, our daily goal should be to get students to track their own academic progress on SL.  That way, when an issue develops (notice I did not say if), students themselves will talk/email their teachers to be proactive.  Obviously, this looks different for different grade levels... but nonetheless a continuum we want our students to progress through.

When using SL as a family, please use it as an opportunity to facilitate a conversation about school.  Also, use the binder reminder to cross reference what is happening in class.  All students at Iron Horse are required to keep and use a “binder reminder,” a planner of some kind. Teachers all over the district use SL slightly differently.  All teachers are required to keep grades on SL, but teachers use it differently in regards to posting weekly/monthly agendas and homework.  The point of this is not to frustrate parents, but mostly to give teachers the needed flexibility of life in the classroom.  Please note that teachers have anywhere from 100-190 students and the best laid plans sometimes go awry.  It also takes time to assess, grade, and post grades.  To give students the feedback they deserve, teachers do the best they can to post and update grades in a timely manner.  You will discover that all Iron Horse teachers will update grades at least every other week (no, grades are not updated in real time). Some teachers will update their SL grades more frequently – it is a professional choice for our teachers. Sixth grade parents... Please visit to sign up for School Loop.

Not to confuse you... but please note that School Loop is different than the Infinite Campus Parent Portal (ICPP) that you use to update emergency and family information.  The ICPP is the district's student information system and can be used to print grade transcripts, but was never meant to report day-to-day academic reports.  This is also where you will go to view your students official report card at the end of the semester in December and June.

Finally... as some parents have already had questions... For the first 3 weeks of a semester, teachers will NOT post grades on SL (except for teachers who do standards based grading). This is due to the fact that one missing assignment or one poor grade can disproportionately impact a student’s grade during the early weeks of a semester. Early in a grading term, student grades can fluctuate quickly. For your own emotional well being... proceed with caution when checking SL early on!

Remember, it is about the learning and not the grade!  We want to promote work ethic and self confidence... our traditional grading system does not always reflect those things. See you at Back to School Night this Thursday, 8/24, starting at 7:00 pm.
